Changes in Drug Development Partner and Project Complexity

In the Biotech Business world today, global drug development partnerships and projects are becoming increasingly complex … as if they weren’t already complex enough.  Currently, drug development partnerships and projects resemble rivers in flood, where the course of flow is constantly shifting and overflowing, while tributaries are busy creating new paths of least resistance.  We, as Alliance and Project Management leaders, are running flat out in Iron Man marathon style, trying to catch our breaths.

Whether its adapting to geopolitical shifts on a constantly, rolling basis or the continuously varying climate and trade policies that come our way, managers and leaders are finding they need to build deep resilience into their partnership oversights and project planning.

Risks these days seem to resemble a mosaic of colors, overlapping, forming new variations of light and unimaginable consequences.  Scenario planning is developing into a completely new methodology; one where the planning is not just a list of backup plans on a laundry list, but rather a multi factorial flow diagram or decision tree that can actively shift on the fly. Identifying poly-risks, where changing social, regulatory, and economic risks interplay, is also becoming a new sporting exercise, as the landscape continuously changes day to day.  Whew… what a lot to consider!

Personally, I think these are also incredibly exciting times. Times that allow Alliance and Project leaders to really shine and show our talents.  It brings to light the importance of true strategic planning and having the ability to adapt.  But it also highlights our skillset in relationship management and the navigation of unforeseen social dynamics; a skillset that is so often called “soft” talent.
